Be Still and Know

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

This painting began with a prompting I felt to paint Christ in a moment of stillness.

His head is bowed. His eyes are closed. There is no crowd, no teaching, no miracle unfolding—only a quiet moment of communion with the Father.

I have often been reminded to be still: to slow down, to listen, to make room for calm, and to trust. As I painted, that message became even more personal. What began in my unfinished basement slowly became a sacred space, and this painting became less about simply depicting Christ and more about contemplating who He is—the Prince of Peace, the Great I Am.

There is something powerful in imagining Christ Himself choosing stillness. If He, in the midst of all He carried, made time to be still and commune with the Father, perhaps we can learn to do the same.

This was my first oil painting completed, and my first portrait. But more than a milestone in my journey as an artist, it feels like a reminder of what I hope my art can offer: a moment to pause, to listen, and to remember.

Be still. Listen. Know. Have faith. Seek peace.

Sometimes the most sacred moments are the ones in which we simply stop long enough to recognize that He is there.
